One of the most common questions parents ask before booking our language summer camp for teens is whether one or two weeks are enough to make real progress in our language program.
The answer is yes – but probably not in the way many people imagine.
Language learning is not measured only by levels
Many parents hope that a week or two of language classes will move their teenager from one level to the next. In reality, language learning takes time, regular practice and repeated exposure.
A short stay is unlikely to transform a student’s grammar level, but it can change something equally important: the confidence to communicate.
At our language summer camp, we have found that real progress is often measured not by grammar tests, but by the willingness to start a conversation.
English: more grammar than conversation
Many teenagers arrive with years of English lessons behind them. They know grammar rules, complete exercises without difficulty and understand written texts.
Yet when they have to speak, many hesitate.
Our classes focus on conversation, interaction and practical communication. Working in small groups and surrounded by an international community encourages teenagers to use English naturally instead of worrying about making mistakes.
Spanish: often a third language
Spanish is a different experience for many participants.
For some it is their third language and they are only beginning to build vocabulary. Others have Spanish family roots and already feel comfortable speaking.
Rather than trying to complete a textbook, we encourage teenagers to discover that they can communicate, understand and express themselves from the very beginning.
Expanding vocabulary and creating curiosity often become more valuable than memorising grammar rules.
Confidence creates motivation
One of the biggest changes we notice during the week is not visible in a test result.
Teenagers stop translating every sentence in their heads. They ask questions, order food, chat with classmates from other countries and realise that language is a tool for communication rather than a school subject.
This confidence often motivates them to continue learning long after summer is over.
A realistic expectation
At Lenguaventura summer camp in Tarifa we do not expect participants to return home fluent. We hope they leave Tarifa with more confidence, new vocabulary and a greater willingness to communicate.
Sometimes that is the most valuable achievement of all. For us, that is what language learning is all about.
