What Happens When Teens Feel Homesick at Camp in Tarifa?

A Normal Part of Being Away From Home

What happens if a teenager feels homesick at camp? Spending time away from home at a summer camp can be exciting and sometimes overwhelming. Even confident teenagers can have moments when they miss home. For some it happens during the first evening, for others after a few days, once the novelty of a new place settles.

When teenagers come to our teen summer camp in Tarifa, they enter a completely new environment: new people, shared routines, different surroundings and a daily rhythm that may feel unfamiliar at first. It is natural that this can bring mixed emotions.

Homesickness is therefore not treated as a problem at camp, but as something that can happen when young people step outside their usual comfort zone.

Recognising the Signs Early

Group leaders spend the entire day with the teenagers, which makes it easier to notice small changes early. Sometimes it is a quieter mood, a moment of withdrawal, or simply the need for a short conversation.

You can read more about how we select and work with our group leaders in our article Who Are the Group Leader at Our Teen Camp in Tarifa?

Often these moments pass quickly once someone takes the time to listen. A calm conversation, reassurance and the feeling of being understood can already make a big difference.

Because group leaders are close to the group throughout the day, these situations rarely remain unnoticed.

The Role of the Group

Another important part of overcoming homesickness is the group itself. Being involved in activities, spending time with others and feeling included naturally shifts attention away from worries.

As teenagers begin to build friendships and share experiences together, the unfamiliar environment slowly becomes familiar. The rhythm of camp life helps create a sense of belonging.

Settling Into the Camp Experience

In most cases, homesickness fades once teenagers settle into the daily rhythm. Confidence grows as they realise they can navigate this new environment and enjoy it.

What matters most is that they are not left alone with their feelings. At our teen summer camp in Tarifa, group leaders stay present and attentive, offering guidance when needed while allowing teenagers to find their own footing.

For many young people, these moments become part of a valuable experience: learning to handle new situations, discovering independence and realising they are capable of more than they expected.

In that sense, homesickness is not just something to overcome – it can also be part of growing up.
