Preparing yourself for summer camp

Discover our tips for preparing yourself for summer camp

There’s just over two weeks to go until Lenguaventura Summer Camp 2022 starts and we couldn’t be more excited! We’re thrilled to be welcoming teenagers from all over the world to Tarifa – one of the best locations across the globe for windsurfing, kitesurfing and wingsurfing! Over the past 19 years we’ve welcomed summer campers from over 25 different countries and this year is no different. Over all these years we’re pros at knowing how best our campers should prepare for summer camp. Read our top tips for preparing for summer camp…
  1. Start packing early

There’s nothing worse than rushing to pack just a few days before camp starts and then realising you’ve forgotten lots of things you need. Our tip is to start packing early. This means you will have time to gather all the items you will need and shop for anything that you don’t have – sunscreen, sunglasses and flip flops… the list goes on! The good news is that Tarifa is equipped with everything you would need for summer camp, so don’t panic if you do forget something, as we can help you locate it once you’re here in Tarifa.

You can find our helpful packing list of what to bring here.

  1. Bring a comfortable and sturdy bag

Make sure your bag is big enough and sturdy enough to hold everything you need. You’ll also be carrying your bag through the airport by yourself before meeting your camp leaders in “Arrivals” so make sure it’s comfortable and easy for you to carry. This leads on from our previous packing tip – by leaving yourself enough time, you can source another bag if you don’t have one that’s big enough.

  1. Do some research

Are there any cool tricks or skills you’d like to learn on the water – such as a back roll or a nuclear grab in kitesurfing? If you know what you want to learn (of course not on a beginner level) while you’re here at Lenguaventura, then you can ask your instructors if they can teach you. You’ll be super skilled on the water before you know it! Here’s some inspiration for cool kitesurfing tricks to get you started.

  1. Become independent to prepare for summer camp

Summer camp is often the first time a teenager has to practice being truly independent. You might experience travelling alone, being away from home for the first time and being away without close friends nearby. It can seem like a scary experience so start taking care of yourself ahead of summer camp starting. This can be just simple things like remembering to make your own bed, keeping on track of your pocket money and getting yourself ready in the morning. These skills will help you adjust to camp life so smoothly. Remember summer camp is a super fun and exciting experience and we promise you’ll have the time of your life! 1. Don’t hide your nerves

Lastly, don’t try to hide your nerves or worries. It’s important to acknowledge how you feel about going away from home to summer camp for the summer. If it’s a new experience it can certainly feel daunting and nerves are completely normal. Talk to your parents or other adults you trust to get their advice. You can also speak to your friends who have been to summer camp before. Talking to people will help you get a good idea about what to expect from summer camp and it’ll help to calm your nerves. Summer camp is a fantastic experience for teenagers and one you’ll remember for a lifetime!
